The best tax-advantaged investment available in Switzerland. Deduction of CHF 7,258/yr from taxable income (saving CHF 2,000-3,500/yr by canton). Invested in ETFs via VIAC or finpension = historical net return of 8-10%/yr after fees.
💡 VIAC Switzerland : A Zurich employee who pays CHF 7,258 into a VIAC pillar 3a every year for 25 years has saved about CHF 75,000 in taxes and accumulated ~CHF 550,000. The best Swiss tax deal.
Thematic ETFs (smart beta)
ETFs targeting specific sectors (tech, healthcare, green energy) or alternative strategies (momentum, low volatility). Outperform broad ETFs at times, less diversified so riskier. An excellent complement to a classic ETF portfolio.
💡 ARK Invest : Cathie Wood's ARK Innovation ETF returned +150% in 2020 then -75% in 2022. Investors who bought at the peak lost two-thirds of their stake. A theme alone is not enough without timing.
LMNP (Furnished Rental)
Furnished rental with an advantageous tax regime allowing you to depreciate the property and drastically cut tax. One of the few schemes letting you collect rent nearly tax-free for 15-20 years.
💡 LMNP experts : A €200,000 property in LMNP can generate €800/mo of nearly untaxed rent for 20 years thanks to accounting depreciation. Little known and underused by individuals.
Bare Rental Real Estate (classic)

💡 Industry professionals : 60% of amateur property flippers lose money on their first deal by underestimating renovation costs and sale timelines.
Ethereum (ETH) HODL
Second cryptocurrency by market cap. Smart-contract platform underpinning most of DeFi and NFTs. Staking possible (4-5%/yr extra). Lower historical return than Bitcoin but a far richer ecosystem.
💡 The Merge 2022 : Ethereum switched from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake in 2022, cutting its energy use by 99.9%. One of the most complex technological events ever pulled off on a live network.
Gold (physical & ETF)
The safe-haven asset par excellence. Average return of 5-7%/yr over 50 years but no dividend. Protection against inflation and systemic crises. Gold ETF (GLD) is more practical than physical.
💡 Markets 2024 : Gold hit a new all-time high of $2,200/oz in March 2024, in a high-rate environment that is theoretically unfavourable to it. The safe haven keeps surprising.
Online Courses (info products)
Creating and selling digital courses on your expertise. Very high margins (80-90%), unlimited scalability, no inventory. The global e-learning market will reach $400 billion in 2026.
💡 Russell Brunson : Russell Brunson built ClickFunnels to $100 million in annual revenue selling only online courses and software. No investor, no funding round. The ICA model.
Government Bonds
Loans to governments in exchange for a fixed return. Considered the safest asset in the world : US and German bonds serve as the global benchmark. Low but predictable yield. Ideal for the defensive part of a portfolio.
💡 Bond markets : In 2022, government bonds lost up to 20% of their value due to rising rates : the worst year for bonds since 1788. "Risk-free" has its limits.
Parking & Cellar
Real-estate investment accessible from €8-15,000. Ultra-simple management, little vacancy, no major damage. Yield of 5-8% in large cities. Same tax regime as classic rental real estate.
💡 Paris 16th example : A parking space in Paris' 16th arrondissement rented €200/mo for a €25,000 purchase = 9.6% yield. With no unpaid rent and no repairs for 15 years.
Private Equity (FCPR)
Investment in unlisted companies. Historical returns above listed markets (13-15%/yr over 20 years) but total illiquidity over 5-10 years and minimums often > €100,000. Democratised by FCPRs accessible from €5,000.
💡 France Invest : French Private Equity delivered +13.5%/yr net over 10 years, beating listed markets. But only the best funds achieve it : fund selection is crucial.
Digital Agency (SEO, Ads)
Selling digital services to businesses. Possible to start with €0 capital. Recurring revenue via monthly retainers. Glass ceiling tied to hours worked unless you scale with a team.
💡 Independent agencies : An SEO agency with 10 clients at €1,500/month = €15,000 monthly revenue with 2-3 people. Margins of 60-70% possible from year 2. B2B is more stable than B2C.
Euro funds (life insurance)
A capital-guaranteed investment held within life insurance. Average return of 2.5% in 2024, rising with rates. Capital available at any time. Perfect for the secure sleeve of a life-insurance portfolio.

Buying individual shares of listed companies. Potentially very profitable but requires serious analysis. The majority of retail investors underperform the market by picking their own stocks.
💡 Morningstar : 90% of professional active fund managers do not beat the S&P 500 over 15 years. A non-professional retail investor has even fewer statistical chances.
Real-Estate Crowdfunding
Financing property developers via platforms. Advertised yield of 8-12% over 12-24 months. Real risk of developer default, poorly documented. Capital locked for the full duration.
💡 Mazars 2023 : In 2023, 5.3% of French real-estate crowdfunding projects were over 6 months late. Several platforms suffered partial defaults.
Corporate Bonds
Loans to private companies. Higher yield than government bonds in exchange for default risk. High-yield bonds can offer 6-10% but with significant loss risk.
💡 Historical data : The average default rate of high-yield corporate bonds is 4% per year in normal times, 10%+ in recession. Diversifying via a bond ETF is essential.
Top 50 Hedge Funds
The world's best hedge funds (Renaissance, Bridgewater) beat the market. But they are closed to retail investors, require minimum entry tickets of $10M, and charge "2 and 20". The elite reserved for the elite.
💡 Jim Simons : Jim Simons' Medallion Fund generated +66%/yr gross for 30 years. But it has been closed to outside investors since 1993 : only Renaissance employees may invest.
Prop Firm (experienced trader)
Prop firms fund traders who pass their "challenges". Looks tempting on paper. In practice, 93% of entrants fail, 7% receive a payout, and the business model relies on losers' entry fees.

💡 Jungle Scout 2024 : 63% of Amazon FBA sellers are profitable after 1 year. 37% don't cover their costs. The best sellers make €100,000+/yr in profit. Product differentiation is crucial.
Pillar 3B (Switzerland)
Swiss tied life insurance, less advantageous than 3a but uncapped. Deductible in some cantons. Often sold by insurers with opaque fees. Compare with a securities account + ETF before signing.
💡 Independent CH advisors : Most 3B contracts sold in Switzerland carry fees of 1.5 to 2.5%/yr over 25 years, wiping out much of the performance. Always compare with a simple ETF securities account.
Mutual Funds
Collective management by professionals. Higher fees than ETFs (1-3%/yr), performance generally below indices over 10 years. Can be relevant for access to niche markets hard to replicate with ETFs.
💡 AMF 2024 : Over 20 years, fewer than 5% of French equity mutual funds beat their benchmark after fees. Yet billions keep flowing into them every year.
Silver
More volatile than gold, with an industrial component (semiconductors, solar panels). The gold/silver ratio historically at 60:1, currently 80:1 : often read as an arbitrage opportunity.
💡 Hunt Brothers 1980 : The Hunt brothers tried to corner the silver market in 1980, driving the price from $6 to $50/oz before the market collapsed. A lesson in market manipulation that lost everything.
Print on Demand
Creating and selling designs on t-shirts, mugs, posters via Printful, Redbubble, Merch by Amazon. No inventory, very low margins (10-20%). Passive income possible once the catalogue is built, but massive competition.

Stablecoins (USDC, USDT)
Cryptocurrencies pegged to the dollar. Let you stay in crypto without volatility exposure. Used for yield farming (5-12%/yr) or to store value. Non-zero de-peg risk (parity loss).
💡 TerraUSD 2022 : TerraUSD (UST), an algorithmic stablecoin, lost 99.9% of its value in 72 hours in May 2022. $40 billion vaporised in 3 days. Not all stablecoins are equal.
Life Annuity (Viager)
Buying a property while the seller keeps usufruct until death. Discounted price in exchange for a monthly annuity. Profitable if the seller dies early, disastrous if they live long. Complex ethical dimension.

💡 Mintos 2020 : Mintos, the largest European P2P platform, had issues with several loan originators in 2020, blocking millions in withdrawals. EU regulation has since tightened requirements.

Selling products online with no inventory, having the supplier ship directly. Low barrier to entry, extreme competition, compressed margins. The vast majority of Shopify stores close within 12 months.
💡 Shopify data 2024 : 90% of dropshipping stores fail in their first year. Dropshipping "coaches" earn far more selling their courses than selling real products.
Term Deposit Account (CAT)
A deposit locked for a fixed term in exchange for a guaranteed rate. Rates of 3-4% over 12-24 months in 2024. Guaranteed by the deposit-guarantee fund (€100,000). Ideal for company treasury or precautionary savings.

Active cryptocurrency trading combines the difficulty of classic trading with the extreme volatility of digital assets. 84% of crypto traders lose in the first year. Survivors face complex taxation and hacking risks.
💡 FTX / Sam Bankman-Fried : In 2022, FTX collapsed in 48h, vaporising $8 billion of client assets. SBF, considered a genius, was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
Average Hedge Fund
The hedge-fund industry as a whole has underperformed the S&P 500 for 15 years. 79% of active funds are beaten by a simple ETF over 10 years. High fees, opacity, and lock-up periods for mediocre returns.
💡 Warren Buffett : Buffett: "Wall Street makes money by selling activity. Investors make money by buying inactivity." The bet he won against hedge funds proves it.
Staking & Yield Farming
Locking crypto to secure a network (staking) or provide liquidity. Real yields of 4-8% for institutional staking, up to 100%+ for DeFi with equivalent risk.
💡 Celsius Network 2022 : Celsius promised 18%/yr on crypto deposits. In 2022 the platform froze withdrawals then went bankrupt. $1.7 billion in deposits lost.
Livret A & LDDS
State-guaranteed regulated savings, rate set by the government. Currently 3% net of tax. Cap €22,950 + €12,000. Total liquidity. Real return often negative after inflation.
💡 Banque de France 2024 : The Livret A pays 3% net of all tax. With inflation at 2.5%, the real return is positive but modest. It is precautionary savings, not a wealth-building tool.
Startup / Angel Investing
Startup investing offers x10 to x100 potential, but 90% of startups fail and 75% of VC investments never return the capital invested. A portfolio of 15+ deals is needed to hope for a positive return.
💡 Peter Thiel : Peter Thiel invested $500,000 in Facebook in 2004, sold for over a billion. But for every Thiel, thousands of angels lost everything on forgotten startups.
Classic Retail Trading
The reality nobody wants to hear: 74 to 89% of retail traders lose money, according to a study covering 8 million traders over 27 years. Active trading is a full-time job, not a lucrative hobby.
💡 Ronald Read : Ronald Read, a gas-station attendant and janitor, amassed $8 million by investing passively for 50 years. With zero trading training. Patience beats speculation.
AI OFM (OnlyFans Management)
Managing adult content-creator accounts by automating interactions via AI. Explosively growing market but ethically complex, legally murky by country, and heavily dependent on platform policies.
💡 OnlyFans 2021 : OnlyFans tried to ban adult content in August 2021 before backtracking 4 days later. AI OFM agencies are entirely dependent on unilateral platform decisions.
Tontines & Community Savings
A collective system where members pay regularly into a common pot. Practised since the 17th century. Still used in modernised form within life insurance. African and Asian tontines (njangi, hui) are active forms of community savings.

PEL (Home Savings Plan)
Locked savings to finance a property project. Rate of 2.25% since 2024. Tax advantage gone since 2018. Mainly useful for the associated loan if market rates > PEL rate.
💡 Banque de France : The PEL lost its tax advantage in 2018. Interest is now taxed at the 30% flat tax. Its only residual interest is the right to a preferential-rate mortgage.
Altcoins (Solana, BNB, XRP...)
Alternative cryptocurrencies to Bitcoin and Ethereum. Extreme volatility, brutal bull/bear cycles. A few serious projects, many tokens with no real utility. Picking winners is more luck than fundamental analysis.
💡 CoinGecko 2024 : Of the 10,000 altcoins created between 2017 and 2020, fewer than 200 still exist in 2024. The other 9,800 lost 99%+ of their value or were abandoned.
Commodities (oil, wheat, copper)
Access via ETF (CRB Index), futures or certificates. Highly cyclical, driven by global geopolitics. Contango (the futures structure) can destroy value even if the spot price rises.
💡 Oil April 2020 : In April 2020 the oil price went negative (-$37). Traders had to pay to get rid of their futures contracts. A lesson on complex derivatives.
Memecoins / Shitcoins

Art & Collectibles
Paintings, sculptures, wine, watches, classic cars, sports cards. Yield of 7-10% on some premium segments. Illiquid market, expertise required, auction-house commissions (20-25%).
💡 Sotheby's 2024 : A bottle of Pétrus 1945 sold for €17,000. An investor who built a cellar of 50 bottles in 2000 achieved +340% in 2024. The problem: how to value it in real time?
Crypto Mining
Using computing power to validate transactions and earn crypto. Bitcoin mining is only accessible to industrial players since 2020. Profitability depends on price, electricity cost and network difficulty.
💡 FR/CH electricity data : A Bitcoin miner in France at €0.25/kWh has not broken even on hardware since the 2024 halving. In Swiss Vaud at €0.08/kWh, the maths is different.
Algo Trading / Bots
Delegating trades to an algorithm or robot. Appealing in theory, disappointing in practice for retail. Truly profitable algos live in hedge funds and cost millions to develop. Bots sold online mainly exploit the fees they charge.
💡 Academic study 2023 : 90% of trading bots sold online for €100-5,000 underperform a simple ETF over 12 months. Some are outright scams.
Diamonds & Gemstones
A tangible asset, uncorrelated to markets. Very opaque market, illiquid, huge transaction costs. Lab-grown (synthetic) diamonds have been crashing natural prices since 2020.
💡 De Beers 2023 : De Beers cut its prices by 40% in 2023 against competition from synthetic diamonds. An asset sold as a "safe investment" for 50 years loses its investment thesis.
Financial Options
Contracts giving the right to buy or sell an asset at a set price. A powerful hedging tool for institutions, a loss-making machine for retail speculators. Time decay (theta) destroys value every day.
💡 CBOE studies : 76% of retail options bought expire worthless. Professional option sellers (market makers) collect that premium systematically.
Futures & Forwards
Deferred buy/sell contracts at an agreed price. Used by farmers to lock in prices and by speculators to bet on commodities, indices or currencies. Very high leverage, proportional risk.
💡 Oil markets : In April 2020 the oil price went negative (-$37): traders had to pay to get rid of their contracts. A retail investor can lose more than their initial capital.
Warrants & Turbos
Leveraged derivatives issued by banks. Can multiply gains and losses. They have a limited lifespan and lose value every day through time decay. Reserved for absolute market experts.
💡 Issuer data : 95% of turbos expire worthless. The issuers are banks that profit on every trade regardless of market direction. The game is structurally losing.
NFTs
Digital ownership certificates on a blockchain. The market exploded in 2021 then collapsed 97% in 2023. The vast majority of NFTs are now worthless. A few projects hold value but in a very illiquid market.
💡 Christie's 2021 : Beeple's "Everydays" NFT sold for $69 million in 2021 at Christie's; it was worth less than $5 million in 2024. The buyer (Metakovan) failed to resell it.
⚠️ MLM & Systems to Avoid
Systems to understand in order to avoid them. These systems exist. Millions of people have lost money in them.
MLM / Legal Pyramid Selling
Direct-selling systems with distributor recruitment. Legal but structurally unfavourable to newcomers. Revenue comes more from recruitment than from actual product sales.
💡 FTC USA : The US FTC studied 350 MLMs. On average, 99.6% of participants lose money after fees. Herbalife paid a $200 million fine to the FTC in 2016.
Forex Clubs / Telegram Signals
Telegram or Discord groups selling trading signals or "training" for €500-5,000. Business model based on membership fees, not on trading performance. "Proof" of gains is easily faked.
💡 AMF 2024 : An AMF study analysed 1,200 French financial influencers. 93% had no accreditation. Several face fraud prosecution.
Ponzi Schemes
Systems promising high guaranteed returns by repaying old investors with new investors' money. Inevitably doomed to collapse. How to spot them: guaranteed returns > 10%, mandatory recruitment, total opacity.
💡 Bernard Madoff : Madoff ran the largest Ponzi in history: $65 billion embezzled over 30 years. The SEC received 6 reports between 1992 and 2008. All ignored.
Fake Forex Brokers (online scams)
Unregulated online trading platforms promising quick gains. They take deposits and refuse withdrawals. Tell-tale signs: cold calling, urgency pressure, insistent personal coach.
💡 AMF 2023 : €9.9 billion lost by French people in investment scams between 2019 and 2023. Forex and crypto make up 60% of those losses. 1 in 200 French people has been scammed.
Crypto Pyramids (OneCoin, BitConnect)
Cryptocurrencies created to raise funds via a pyramid scheme. OneCoin raised €4 billion from 3 million victims. No real blockchain existed.

Gaël's Note : ICA Founder
« After 10 years testing over 200 financial products and advising hundreds of individuals, my conviction is clear: a well-chosen index ETF is the foundation of any healthy portfolio. It's not sexy, it's not exciting, but it's what the data shows works. Everything else is an optional satellite around that core. »
